CHRIS HANNEY Facing life in prison.
She survived one of the most monstrous and horrific crimes imaginable — and now she’s hoping her abusive husband, an ex-NYPD detective, will be put away for life.
Audrey Mabrey, 29, was beaten, raped and torched by Christopher Hanney on Nov. 17, 2009, on Florida’s Gulf Coast.
When Mabrey stopped by her estranged husband’s home in Apollo Beach that fateful afternoon, he appeared before her “stark naked with a butcher knife,” she testified in his trial.
He took her to the garage, threw her onto a blanket and, according to Mabrey’s own dramatic testimony, raped her, yelled at her and beat her with a hammer.
Hanney told his estranged wife he was going to call her ex-boyfriend in Kansas and “force him to listen to me die,” Mabrey said in brave testimony.
Then Hanney doused her with gasoline — and tossed a lit candle at her.
“I instantly go up in flames,” Mabrey told jurors. “I thought I was going to die.”
But somehow, as Hanney ran away, Mabrey stood up, opened the garage door and escaped.
A neighbor doused the flames and, following instructions from a 911 dispatcher, put Mabrey under a shower until she could be airlifted to a hospital.
Hanney, meanwhile, ran from the burning house and asked a good Samaritan who came to his aid: “Did I kill the bitch?”
Mabrey was burned over 80 percent of her body — nearly everywhere but her feet. She spent the next month in a medically induced coma and has undergone seven surgeries.
Jurors didn’t buy Hanney’s defense — a wild story about how Mabrey and an unknown accomplice tied him to a chair and tried to burn him with gasoline. He claimed that Mabrey caught fire as he tried to escape.
Jurors deliberated 5 1/2 hours Thursday before they found Hanney guilty of attempted first-degree murder, which in Florida can carry a life sentence.
Before he retired from the NYPD, Hanney, 46, was a detective in the 66th Precinct in Borough Park, Brooklyn.
After moving to Florida, he became a federal TSA agent at the airport in Bradenton.
Mabrey has said that she believes Hanney was jealous when their marriage came apart — and that he even claimed one of their two children was fathered by an ex-boyfriend.
“He just snapped. He couldn’t handle us no longer being together, and he just snapped,” she said.
