Mike Trout often causes people to stare at the sky, but usually it’s to follow the path of one of his home runs. Recently, though, he had a very special message inscribed in the heavens for the woman who is now his fiancee.

The joyous moment occurred on June 28, to judge from a tweet sent by the woman now engaged to Trout, Jessica Tara Cox. “After a few unforgettable days at home and in Boston with our families, I’m so excited to finally be able to officially call this amazing man my fiance,” she wrote, in a message shared on social media. Trout’s Angels wrapped up a weekend series at the Red Sox that included a 21-2 win on Saturday.

Trout, 24, and Cox are high school sweethearts, having begun dating in their home town of Millville, N.J. He went on to become arguably the best position player in baseball, having already been to four all-star games and won the 2014 AL MVP award. Before the 2014 season, Trout signed a six-year, $144 million contract extension with the Angels.

The engagement likely provided a rare bright spot during a tough stretch — at least on the field — for Trout and his team. The Angels lost on Sunday, 10-5, for their 11th defeat in their past 13 games, and their record fell to 33-49, among the worst in baseball.

The down year is hardly the fault of Trout, though, who is continuing his stellar play. Entering Sunday, he was batting .327, with 17 home runs, 53 RBI, 12 stolen bases and a 1.002 OPS. According to Baseball Reference, he was leading all players in wins above replacement (5.2) and in base-out runs added (35.78).
